Decorating at Home with Large Wall Clocks

Size and proportion really do matter, especially if you’re decorating your home and are trying to find a wall clock, large or small, that fits in. If you’re in some tiny, cramped studio apartment, the last thing you want is a large wall clock that will overwhelm your living area.

Modern, or Craftsman?

This first thing to do before deciding on whether or not you’re getting a large wall clock or a small one, is to take your house’s style and decor into consideration. For example, if you have modern furnishings with clean lines, a cuckoo clock would be an entirely inappropriate choice. On the other hand, a sleek model in black or with a chrome finish might be appropriate for a room with a modern feel to it.

Sizing Up Your Room

Now that you’ve got your style firmly in mind, it’s time to determine whether or not a large wall clock is appropriate for your home. While you could just go by eye, it’s probably much safer to do a few initial measurements. Let’s say that you’ve found an empty spot on the wall and think it would be just perfect for your clock.

Try marking the approximate size you’re considering with tape. Then take a step back and try to visualize whether it fits in perfectly, dominates the room, or seems undersized. If you’re having a difficult time, use scrap cardboard to create a simple mock-up (just outline it to determine the depth). Now you’re ready to shop!

Alternative Timepieces

Let’s say that you’re just not interested in adding visual clutter with a large wall clock. If you have a plasma TV hanging on your wall, you’re certainly not going to want to place a clock right next to it. It would be a major distraction and detract from the cinematic experience.

Let your pre-existing technology be your friend instead! If you’re still using a VCR to record programs, chances are that it has an automatic clock with which you can make do. If you have a cable box, it too will likely come equipped with an automatic clock. If all else fails, you could settle for small tabletop model.

Just be sure that you always keep style and proportion foremost in your mind if you should choose a wall clock. The last thing you want to do is have to stare at an eyesore every day.
